Notifications and Nudging

What you get told about

Notifications cover the moments where you have something to do or something to see: a round opening, a deadline getting close, voting opening, a round finishing, somebody replying to your comment, an invite arriving, and chat.

Tapping any of them takes you to the right place in the app rather than just opening it.

Deadline reminders

You get a reminder a day before a deadline and again an hour before. The one hour reminder replaces the one day reminder rather than stacking on top of it.

These expire. If your phone was off overnight you will not wake up to a warning about a deadline that has already passed.

Nothing breaks through Focus

No notification the app sends will break through Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode, including deadline warnings. This is deliberate. Nothing in a music league is urgent enough to override what you have told your phone.

The number on the app icon

The badge counts things waiting on you: submissions you owe, ballots you owe, invites you have not answered, and unread chat.

On Android there is no way to put a number on an app icon directly, so it hangs off a single silent notification. You can turn that one off in your Android settings without losing deadline reminders.

Dots and counts inside the app

The hub buttons carry a red count of how many things need you. A league with something waiting on you gets a red border around its card in the league list. Inside a league, the home and chat tabs carry a dot.

Turning things off

Settings has a master switch for push notifications, plus two chat switches. Tagged messages are on by default, so you hear about it when someone mentions you. Every new message is off by default.

If your phone is blocking notifications at the system level, the switch says so and offers to open your phone's settings.

Nudging

A nudge is a direct poke at one person who has not submitted or voted yet. It sends them a notification saying so.

Only admins and commissioners can nudge. The button sits under each outstanding person in the awaiting strip on the home screen, and there is a long press option on their picture as well.

You can nudge the same person in the same league once every twelve hours. If the notification does not reach them the cooldown is not used up.

Nudging is not available in the web app.

Reminders to start a league

If you create a standard league and then never press Start, the app reminds you. It waits a day, then nudges you at most every couple of days, up to four times, and gives up after three months.

It never starts the league for you. If the league does not have enough people yet, the reminder says that instead, since telling you to press a button that is greyed out would not help.

Scheduled leagues start themselves and never get these.
